Jack sat at his desk, eating a makeshift breakfast while going over the reports from last night. The battle they’d fought against the Locusts had yielded a number of prisoners, the computer cores from what he supposed was the flagship of the group of Tardans, and the control equipment and codes to issue instructions to the Locusts.

Amanda and her staff had stayed up late going over everything and then turned it over to third shift. While that had been taking place, Hunter had jumped to the second system, where they decided to destroy the gates to isolate New Paris and completed that task, and they were now just arriving in the third system where they would finish the job.

Neither the second system nor the third one had any Locusts or Tardans, so the task was straightforward and quick. As soon as they destroyed the gate in this system, they would begin the trip back to New Paris and be there in about two hours. When they arrived, they’d see if the situation had changed during their absence and make adjustments to the plans Amanda and her people had come up with if needed.

None of the Tardan prisoners had chosen to speak, not even when confronted with Ensign Vassen. He wasn’t certain whether that was because they viewed Vassen as a traitor or they didn’t want to tell anyone anything. He couldn’t change that behavior in the short term, but they would eventually force some kind of information out of this group. If not, once they finished with New Paris, they’d find a place to put any survivors of the battle that was to come and put his prisoners in with them.

Confederation Intelligence and their Naval Intelligence counterparts had been going over what they could of the computer files they’d captured. The cores had been encrypted, and gaining access took most of the night, but Lisa had left detailed notes on the process. Following them, his people were able to crack into the files in question, though the most secure ones were still locked away using codes that might not be so simple to deal with.

Unfortunately, there really wasn’t much information about this particular incursion. It seemed that each group of Tardan military vessels knew what was going on with their operations and reported to officers above them in the chain of command.

This particular group had indeed made their way to Faust and been cut off when Scorpius had destroyed the gate they were using. They had lost about eighty percent of their forces when that happened and had been on their way back to New Paris to report.

He’d hoped to get a complete listing of how many enemy ships they were dealing with and how many Locusts, but that wasn’t included in the data he could access at this time. It might be in the most highly encrypted files, but that wouldn’t help them in time to deal with New Paris.

Actually, he didn’t need to know the specifics of their
